Haiti's celebration of its bicentennial this year has been marred by political and economic crises that have become all too common in this nation's long, troubled history. In 2004, Haiti once again stands at a crossroads. Will the shifting political tides bring new hope to the Haitian people? What kind of role will the US and global financial institutions like the World Bank play during and after this tumultuous time? And how are grassroots communities responding to the new threats and opportunities?
Seeing no easy answers, Grantmakers Without Borders will sponsor a donor and funder tour to offer individual and institutional funders the opportunity to hear the views and share in the visions of Haitian organizations and communities. The itinerary will combine stimulating encounters in Port-au-Prince with a voyage into Haiti's countryside to acquaint participants with the creativity and resilience of rural Haitians.
To create as intimate an environment as possible, the group will split in two during the visit to the countryside. One group will head up to the Central Plateau, where incredible community organizing is taking place. Another group will head to the Artibonite, still Haiti's breadbasket despite the onslaught of imported rice and other foodstuffs.
To coordinate the delegation, Grantmakers Without Borders will work with several of our member institutions that, collectively, have sponsored dozens of trips to Haiti and that are in constant contact with local partners regarding security conditions, logistical arrangements, and other concerns.
This delegation will offer funders and donors an exceptional opportunity to see with their own eyes how global policies play out at the grassroots level in Haiti.
The cost of the delegation is $750 per person. This includes all expenses in Haiti, including food, transport and lodging. Delegates will need to purchase their own airline ticket to and from Port-au-Prince.
