Long after the US first launched a war in Iraq, that country remains a prominent and fiercely debated symbol of US power abroad. That influence, of course, is in no way unique to Iraq. In Haiti, Afghanistan, Liberia, and Columbia, to name just a few countries, the US exercises enormous military, political, economic, and cultural power that too is a cause of vigorous debate. For some, the US represents an agent of economic opportunity and democratic change. For others, it is a dominating force of impoverishment and cultural decline. Equally debated is the role of the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and other global institutions. For some, these agents spur economic growth. For others, they are a major cause of environmental destruction, economic disparity, and social exclusion. What has been the on-the-ground experience of poor grassroots communities in the developing world directly affected by the policies of these powerful international players? "Global Policy, Grassroots Change" will explore this essential question. Foundation representatives will join grassroots leaders to share stories from the field. We will hear how some communities are taking advantage of opportunities created by these outside powers. We will learn how some are resisting such forces and pushing back. And we will explore how many grassroots communities are creating alternatives to the policies of outside forces, fostering positive change on their own terms. "Global Policy, Grassroots Change" will look into the strategies grantmakers have used to stimulate global social change-from supporting advocacy on US policy, to funding the development of alternatives, to working in solidarity with broad-based social movements who believe that another world is possible. Grantmakers Without Borders' conference promises an opportunity for funders to learn new strategies to promote global pluralism, democracy, prosperity, and participation from the grassroots up.
