What's New in Africa: Trends on the Continent and What it Means to Funders
To position our dialogue and learning on grantmaking in Africa, a distinguished panel will discuss several issues of priority for social change grantmakers working in Africa:

  • Regina Amadi-Njoku, former Africa Director of the International Labor Organization and Regional Director for UNIFEM in Lagos, will discuss the impact of the global economic crisis on Africa, with a particular focus on women and workers.

  • Maina Kiai (invited), former Chairman of the Kenya National Commission of Human Rights, will discuss issues of human rights and the democratic space in Africa.

  • Neimat Kuku, from the Center for Gender Research and Training (Sudan) and the Global Call to Action against Poverty, will provide an update on political and humanitarian crises, including Darfur.

11:45 am to 12:30 pm

US Policy in Africa under Barack Obama
Grantmakers Without Borders has invited Johnny Carson, recently appointed by the Obama Administration as Assistant Secretary of State for Africa, to brief participants on what he sees as the future of US policy on the African continent. Should Mr. Carson not be able to join us we expect his office to send another representative. This session will be moderated by Ndimyake Mwakalyelye, host and reporter for Voice of America TV to Africa's latest program, Perspectives, a daily English-language television program for viewers in sub-Saharan Africa. Ms. Mwakalyelye is also a reporter and co-host for Studio 7, a live daily radio news program focusing on Zimbabwe.
